After her human mother had died Elohna had been taken care of by her father Morcant Darkdrifter, a low level noble, and hunter for the gray elf settlement that they lived in. Elohna's mother Aiofe had seen fit to teach Elohna in the ways of human magic, which for Elohna was easy to learn. The concept of magic came naturally to her though it was mostly nature magic, yet on her own time Elohna would go to study in the libraries of the nobles. There she had stumbled upon the dark magic, power over life and death, this too came naturally to her, as everything in nature that was alive eventually died.

Morcant was at a loss of what to do with his adolecent child she was only 28, he knew little of raising a proper elf maiden, and even less on how to deal with her human temperment. He was a hunter, used to dealing with animals, and the men and women in his hunting party, but they were already grown adults. He also know little of magic and his daughters powers scared him slightly, so as any caring father would do he took his concerns to the Elders. Upon expressing his concerns for raising a growing child alone and her powers, he asked the elders to help him find something that would occupy her and help her learn and grow into the woman she would once be.

Elohna was the only half elf in this small community of gray elves, and therefor she did not fit in well, the elders found this opportunity as a way to get rid of her, and clear their town of all none elves. They suggested that Morcant send her to Alar'ai and there she would go to school at the Academy of Mages.

She pouted but would not argue, and with in the day she packed what she could carry, a bow, a quiver of arrows, a staff, a small bag of food and books and headed out.

-------

Days of traveling found Elohna's black robes and crimson cloak road worn, her soft leather boots were not made for such travel. It was mid-day but the sky was overcast and threatening to rain on her. She grinned softly welcoming the gloom, but sighed softly as she was beginning to miss contact with other living beings.

"You would think that on this road I would have run into at least one group of traveling strangers, or even another single person." As she spoke to herself she pushed her raven black hair behind her right pointed ear and kept walking.

The public bath house is easy enough to sneak into, especially if he makes puppy dog eyes at the older woman who works the desk. After a wondrous bath he dresses again, drying his stumped arm and attaching his metal claw, flexing the hooked digits experimentally before wrapping his red and blue sash around his damp scalp to let his unruly hair dry naturally. He is the epitome of wild and free, yet not entirely chaotic. As the infamous rogue bard ambles out of the inn with his things he is clambered by a few young folk who wish to hear a song of his. Matrim smiles and dips his head respectfully; no matter what age anyone might be they are all living and should be anointed as such. He withdraws his lyre and thusly begins to sing a melodious tune, a story from his own desert culture about two goddesses’ finding love in one another…

“Her cry resonates as she seeks out the other
Looking at the barren forest, a reply send the heart a flutter.
Into view arises a figure that the Great Horned Owl with bronze eyes
Finds to be ivory, one of dappled heavens that isn’t despised.

No longer does she watch the swan upon his lake
As now the horned one joins her on the peak.
The speckle-bellied owl goes to this throne
Both, at last, can say they are home.”

It's a short song but he is short on time. If it weren't for Freckle then Matrim would've slept in too late and not be motivated to leave this day he has planned to do such. He plucks the final strings with his clawed hand, woefully parting from the children as they stumble after his heels, leading Freckle towards the gates.

Not everyone in this city is a music lover. Years ago when his hand was chopped off by the captain of the guards, the captain’s son, a guard in training, had been watching snidely from the side. That very son of the captain still harasses Matrim from time to time. Like today for example. A splitting tone challenges Matrim, guards come from a few sides of the street to encircle him. He frowns and shoos the children, releasing Freckle’s ruff to let the aerial mutt seemingly roam off out to the bridge leading away from the city out into the wilderness and the great intersection beyond. He at first displays his hands outspread to show no harm possible, before using the full sheath of his sword to smack a guard upside the head. Instantly swords are drawn to his back, Matrim turns and begins to slowly pedal himself backwards, sandals raising some dust from the street.

“Now, now…let’s all take a deep breath…wouldn’t want to do something we regret, hm?”
Humanity isn’t so kind, his own has been partially lost due to the elimination of his hand moons ago. And it’s by sheer luck that he should be able to somersault betwixt a guard’s legs, rising to scamper down an alley as quickly as possible. His blood rushes through his body as his heart remains a steady rhythm. Yes; this is one of his lives as a rogue. Getting into places he shouldn’t be, escaping as a slinking miscreant who won’t deal bloodshed. His clawed hands grips into a crack in the wall, launching himself to hop back and forth between the two buildings bordering him until he’s up on the rooftops, tattered sash fluttering out behind him like some warrior‘s banner. Oh yes, Lady Fortuna has certainly spun him a kind wheel of fate today. The guards sally forth but Matrim is nimble although wary. He rolls and dives, jumping across some obstacles until he’s able to slide down a wooden pole, feet hammering the road as he rushes for the bridge. Freckle is in the middle of the elongated bridge, awaiting his rider. Spotting the rogue bard the animal begins to trot, unfurling his hazy wings as his floppy ears perk, whippy tail snapping. Behind the man, each guard makes quite a din in haste to snatch up the partial gypsy. Up ahead the bridge militia turn to partake as well, weapons drawn…everything becomes surreal. Matrim is suddenly deaf to all else, only able to hear his panting breath, his pounding sandals, and the heavy paws of Freckle. The rogue bard is blind save for the image of his faithful, feathered dog up ahead. Azure eyes widening, he crouches somewhat and springs as Freckle picks up pace to start galloping, wings knocking aside a few men. And the world speeds up again. The sudden flash of sights stuns Matrim as does the ringing of all the noise around him. Sword in it’s sheath, lyre upon his back, the man and his companion take to the skies a few meters away from the actual exit on the bridge leading into the human city.

Now that he’s outside, away from law and authorities, he feels at peace, tranquil nearly. Rather tired from the brisk actions but at least he and Freckle weren’t harmed. The winged hound spots some birds ahead and eagerly follows them, not heeding Matrim’s demands at all for this occasion. Rolling his eyes the man can only hug his pet’s neck and wait. Soon a figure can be sighted up ahead, down on the ground. They’re nearly a dot so he pushes Freckle’s head down to urge the beast lower. Going lower he can make out, from the way the cool air blew against the cloak, it was a woman there. Well now! How odd...women usually have an escort or some form of company in their wanderlust, or so he's always known. Not wanting to sneak up on the woman he gave a soft whistle to better announce his presence from above. "Good day, mi'lady! Any chance my friend and I could join you for a few paces?"

Elohna stopped in her tracks and looked about as there was no one on the road infront of or behind her she looked up. Her green eyes sparkled as she was startled for a moment, to startled to hide her slightly pointed ears.

She smiled as she looked up. "Hello sir. Join me? " She repositioned her staff in her hand and thought for a second. "Well yes if you would like, this road is long and lonely and I fear that by foot I have a few days travel ahead of me. "

"I was just about to stop under that tree for lunch and I hope that if it does rain it won't get me to wet." She nodded her head toward the nearest tree and her short black hair bobbed around her face.

"Would you and....uh...your friend care to join me during my rest? Company would be lovely." She wondered toward the tree not waiting for his answer, either he would follow after offering some company or he would keep going because he didn't feel like stopping just yet. However she had hoped he would stop with her.

As she neared the tree she did look back to see if he would follow.

Matrim was thankful he had not startled the lass, that would have made for a very poor first impression. "Of course, we thank you! Company is always preferred in this world." Matrim pat Freckle's head and the winged desert hound softly glided down to a land, plodding towards the tree. His curly tail whipped around excitedly as he stared earnestly at the woman. With a chuckle Matrim dismounted and rubbed at his pet's neck.

"This oaf is Freckle and I am Matrim. We're exploring the land and I am here to observe magicks although I am without mana myself." he smiled sheepishly, aware that once someone knew he could not produce magick his company was often shunned. Hopefully this would not be the case with this woman. His electric blue eyes looked at his newfound company as she moved to rest at the tree, vaguely noticing the shape of her ears. The man opened up a small sidepack attached to Freckle, pulling out some dried fruits and dried meats dipped in honey wrapped in breathable cloth. Such provisions were taught to him by his gypsy clan of the dunes.

"Nothing fancy but I would like to offer you some of my food." face shrouded by his red and blue scarves the rogue held out a bundle with his regular hand. He never serves others with his claw, it tends to make people uneasy. As Matrim knelt he glanced up at the sky. "Those clouds do look pregnant with water...if it rains and you must keep moving, Freckle's wings can help to keep his dry as you walk." he offered as he lowered his gaze from the sky, starting to relax. The feathery hound meanwhile whined and laid down, rolling over on his belly and pathetically waving his paws in the air for food. Matrim's mouth firmed in a straight line and he shook his head at the hamming shame of his pet. "You've already eaten, silly beast!"

Elohna watched the man slide off the gryphon. "A pleasure Matrim and...Freckle? did you say that was his name?" She held out her hand in greeting. "My name is Elohna Darkdrifter, daughter of Morcant Darkdrifter of the Darkdrifter settlement in the northern parts of Cremaera."

After introducing herself she piled a few fallen leaves and branches from the tree and with a small flick of her wrist set it aflame. Her favorite color was crimson and using her gifts for play they fire was a deep crimson color instead of the natural color of fire. She smiled and sat near the warmth. she removed her pack, bow, and quiver and propped them against the tree, as well as her black staff.

"Oh I do not mind the rain or getting wet from it, I just hope it holds off long enough to not soak my meal. Thank you for the kind offer of your friends wing however." She opened her bags to reveal pinenut bread, some berries she picked along the way and untied a hare from the side of her pack that she had recently killed and skinned. With another small branch of the tree she spitted the hare and set it over the flame.

"If you share your fair meal with me then I shall share mine with you. It is only proper." She offered Matrim some of her berries as she sliced the pinenut bread.
would uh...Freckle also like some? I am sure there is enough to go around." As she spoke she looked at the large beast she had never been this close to one before and wondered how its fur felt under naked fingers.

"Yes, Freckle. He's a silly pooch...Cremaera? I've yet to explore that land.", when she offered her hand in greeting he used his hand to gently take her fingers, kissing the top of her hand with a wink of his smiling eyes, his scarves covering most of his face, "Though I can see they have wonderful treasures hidden away there." he added rakishly as he lowered her hand from his tanned digits. Her last name meant little to him as he was not a native of Cremaera nor aware of its people. Matrim had a hard enough time keeping up with himself these days right here at home!

When she set a crimson fire nearby he sat up straighter, now kneeling next to Elohna, vaguely listening to her thank him for the offer of the winged dog's wing. He glanced to the lovely lady and smiled, nodding in gratitude as he took the offered foods. "Thank you, Miss Elohna. And don't worry about feeding Freckle, he's had a whole roast this morning...he got into the butcher shop again I'm afraid. Naughty boy, aren't you, Freckle? Silly, loveable mutt..." he waggled a finger at the vast hound. Freckle whined again, his muddy pelt nearly blending in with the ground.

Matrim shook his head some before turning his attention to Elohna once more. "Tell me, why are you walking out here on your lonesome? You're obviously adept at magick, but I rarely see anyone with mana walking alone...safe to assume you are a type of magi, no offense!"
